CHAPTER 6
The next morning, while Marta was cooking breakfast for the three of them, Elaina came out from her small bedroom and sat at the folding dining table. She cleared her throat several times before Marta snapped out of her daze.
“Oh, sorry,” she mumbled, then grabbed a cup and poured coffee for her sister. Marta set the cup on the table and Elaina gave her a disapproving look.
“So, I noticed you and that handyman yesterday,” Elaina baited. Marta kept herself busy at the stove. “You like him?”
Marta stopped stirring the eggs for a moment. “He’s a very nice man. And he’s the resort manager, not the handyman,” she corrected.
“So is that what you spend your days doing . . . hanging out with him?”
“Sometimes,” Marta admitted.
“Well, I think you need to spend a little more time around here. You’re slacking on your duties.
“I beg your pardon?” Marta turned on her sister.
“The bathroom needs to be cleaned . . .”
“I cleaned it yesterday from top to bottom.”
“Well, you wouldn’t know it,” Elaina scoffed. “The mirror is full of streaks and I don’t think you touched the stool.” Marta turned back to the eggs and clenched her teeth in frustration.
“Fine. I’ll clean it again.”
“I’d like you to do a few more things today as well. The beds all need to be stripped and the bedding washed. My laundry is beginning to pile up, and I’d like you to take the car into town and get a few things for me.”
Marta balled her hands at her sides into fists. Why all of a sudden was Elaina wanting all this extra work done? Was she jealous that Marta had finally found a friend?
“That’s going to take me all day,” muttered Marta.
Elaina snorted. “Well, it’s not like you have anything better to do except poke your nose into a book.
“What I do with my time is no concern of yours!” Marta lashed out.
“Excuse me, missy. I’ll thank you not to take that tone with me. We’re doing you a favor, here. The least you could do is be a little grateful for a roof over your head and a beautiful place to stay for a month.”
“I’m very grateful you took me in, Elaina. But I’m your sister, not your maid. The least you could do is treat me like an equal.”
Elaina got dangerously close to Marta’s face and poked her manicured fingernail into Marta’s chest. “You will never be my equal,” she said with a lethal venom. “Now, finish my breakfast.”
Marta turned back to the stove, angry tears forming in her eyes, but she’d never give Elaina the satisfaction of letting her see her cry. She served Elaina her breakfast, as well as William, who had just come in from his run. Having lost her appetite, she tore the bedclothes off of the beds, loaded the sheets into baskets and took all of the dirty laundry with her out the door of the RV, being sure to slam it as loudly as she could.
Marta stalked off toward the laundry cabin, her mind reeling with choice words for her sister.
